THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDG's)
Build A School operates to help improve the lives of children now and for the future. We have diversified our objectives to allow us to target the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set out by the United Nations.
These 8 goals were set out to help galvanise efforts to focus on the core problems faced by the world’s poorest- by 2015. Build A School is working closely to promote 3 of these 8 goals- education, environmental sustainability and equality.
Our long-term vision supporting these 3 areas will provide a foundation to help achieve other MDGs, such as assisting children with education can improve the ability to lift themselves out of poverty (MDG no 1- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger).
The eight Millennium Development Goals are:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
How Build A School is helping reach the MDG's
2. Achieve Universal Primary Education
*Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary education.
We are working to increase the number of classrooms for as many boys and girls as possible to enjoy an education.
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
*Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.
Our schools provide education for boys and girls. Our future construction work will employ women trained in construction- an area hugely under-represented by women at present.
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
*Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources.
We are working to improve on the sustainability of the schools we build and the energy they use. We are designing a sustainable development education centre in Malawi.
