FAQs
Is there a need to build schools?
There is a huge need for schools with some governments leaving the construction to non-government organisations such as ours.
What happens once you have built a school?
It is handed over to the local community and the government provide the teachers and learning materials.
Can I go abroad and build a school?
Unfortunately we are not set up to allow volunteers at present. We try and employ local people only as this is a welcome source of income for them. If skilled builders have a specific project idea we can revise this and consider a proposal, please contact luke@buildaschool.org.uk.
What are your future plans?
We are focusing on completing our building project commitments and looking to open a sustainable development education centre in Lilongwe, Malawi. We want to promote this type of development for others to learn from and improve.
How can you build using sustainable methods in Malawi?
Using local materials is a must, and utilising renewable energy options such as solar and wind. We consider the least harmful ways of doing things, for example looking for chemical free alternatives to making wood termite proof.
Which areas of sustainable development will you promote?
At our centre we will promote best practice in animal husbandry, agriculture, building, energy use and fair trade.
I’m a teacher- how can I support Build A School?
We are always keen to promote our work in schools. Please get in touch.
Do you only build in Malawi?
At present, yes, but we are looking to use our work in Malawi as a model to extend our work to other countries.
